1.30.30: System > Mindset > Goals + The Brain ðŸ§
Designing the optimal morning, mindset, workout and an annual report.
As I mentioned in last month's newsletter, I've ultimately let go of making resolutions or setting strict goals. Instead, I'm focused on designing systems for life.
The concept sounds way more complicated than what it actually means, but systems are a powerful way to create lasting change and can be tailored to meet our individual needs. Goals, while being useful in some cases, often lead to disappointment and comparing ourselves to others.
Below you'll find various clips, sound bites, and other things that can help you start designing some new systems in 2023.
I've listened to Andrew Huberman on and off since stumbling across his Joe Rogan interview, but as I dive more into systems thinking, I've gravitated back to his work.
As a neuroscientist Professor, Andrew brings clarity to one of nature's most complex designs, the brain. — Every episode is worth checking out.
So instead of fighting against nature or over-indexing on personal preferences. Try rooting your design process in science.
Designing the Optimal Morning Routine 😎
Before we can dominate a year, we have to dominate the day. This morning routine shows you how to do just that.
Designing a Mindset
The perspective we choose to view life from is a design choice that impacts EVERYTHING.
Rick Rubin joins to break down the intricate process of tapping into your creativity. It’s definitely a LONG episode to sit through in one go, so i’ve been listening to it in increments, but it’s beautiful to see Art and Science merge in this way.
I’m sure you’ve heard of the book Atomic Habits by now. — If you haven’t already or have been dragging your feet to read it. This is your official sign from the universe to change that.
In this short clip, the author of the book, James Clear, breaks down the role Self Identity plays when trying to create a system to change behavior.
Practice seeing people as trees 🌳
It’s a concept that, on the surface, sounds like hippy mumbo jumbo but is actually quite profound. It’s a reminder that in the midst of actively seeking improvement, we can’t forget to love ourselves just the way we are.
Designing a Workout Routine
The biggest system I’m looking to establish this year is how I work out. The older I get, the harder it seems to get for me to figure out a routine that is engaging, effective, and easy to stick to. I’ll share my progress later in the year but check this clip out for some foundational things we all need in our workout program.
Designing an Annual Report
The ideal end state is a good place to start when trying to brainstorm a path forward, so how will you review the end of your year?
This designer transforms aspects of his everyday life into beautiful data charts to explore.
Instead of looking at the new year as a list and goals to knock out, start exploring other ways to visualize and analyze your year.
I only managed one newsletter this month, but more are on the way! — The system is working 🥹.
Any questions or suggestions? Don’t hesitate to reach out or leave a comment. This is infinitely a work in progress, and I appreciate all the readers willing to roll with me on the journey.
